Problem Statement

Because of the world's growing population and economic progress, energy consumption demand has risen significantly. Pakistan continues to rely on common thermal natural resources for power generation. Although these resources can no longer rely on energy as a major source due to rising prices and a negative impact on the environment, they can no longer rely on it as a secondary source of energy. Energy consumption in the construction sector will be reduced as a result of this research, both in the early design phase and in already existing structures, in areas such as the HVAC system and insulation, daylighting and occupancy control, and panel efficiency etc. For this reason, energy optimizations should be considered as a part of the contracting process for new building projects.

Description

This is a BIM based project in which Autodesk Revit is used as a modeling tool and Autodesk Insight 360 is used as Building energy optimization tool. The purpose for doing this project is to promote the optimization of energy in residential sector as this sector consumes great portion of energy as compared to other sectors like Industrial and Commercial sectors etc.

Introduction:

The biggest challenge the humanity is facing is the desire for improvement of the quality of life for the people in the developing world, which essentially depends on how much energy is available to them. That is one side, the other side is that protecting the environment and having a system to prevent the climate change. It is easy to say that we can produce more energy by the conventional means of burning fossils fuels, but in this way the climate cannot be controlled. In order to solve this problem, there are a lot of solutions which includes the renewable energy like solar and wind energy, but this study will mainly focus on how to minimize the energy consumption in residential buildings. In this research the procedures used are, changing the orientation of the building and introducing some energy efficient materials into the building envelop using Building Information Modeling (BIM).


Methodology:

Building Information Modeling:

When it comes to building information modelling (BIM), it is all about creating and managing virtualized illustrations of a building or facility in a computer-generated environment.Within the context of building design methods that are BIM-enabled, architects can use the BIM technique to study multiple design concepts in a relatively short period of time. After the conceptual design is complete, architects can continue to enhance the BIM model in the illustrated design. Following the creation of the BIM model, energy simulation and analysis can be performed using the geometry and information contained within the BIM model.

  • 3D Model Creation:

Autodesk Revit Architectural is used for creating virtual model of 9 stories residential building.


  • 3D Model to Building Energy Model (BEM):

After the completion of Revit Model is exported to Insight 360 for energy optimization on the Building Energy Model (BEM). The workflow that should be followed to convert Revit model into Building Energy Model is given below.

  3.  Create Energy Model
  4.  Generate
  5.  Optimize 

After clicking on the Optimize button Revit will take us to Autodesk Insight 360 where we can change different parameters like Glass properties, Wall construction, Roof Constrction etc, which will utimately affect the energy consumption of building. 

Summary

Sustainable structures have become clear in order to reduce the environmental impact of the building through passive designs and an efficient use of energy and materials. The goal of this study is to investigate the influence on energy consumption and costs of a residential building of the orientation, sunlight and building envelopes. Energy consumption is steadily rising across the world. Moreover, buildings account for 33% of total energy utilization, 40% of total resource consumption, 50% of CO2 emissions, and 20-30% of garbage released globally. Because of the world's growing population and economic progress, energy consumption has risen dramatically. Pakistan continues to rely on common thermal natural resources for power generation According to Pakistan Country Statistics (2018), the primary energy consumption has grown by 150% in the last twenty years. In developing economies like Pakistan, the residential sector dominates for overall energy demands among all other sectors because of the low scale of economic activities in the industrial, commercial, or agriculture sector. In order to solve the problem of increasing energy consumption in Pakistan day by day, the research will focus on minimizing the energy consumption in residential sector, because it consumes more energy than other sectors like industrial and commercial etc. The major goal of the research thesis is to achieve sustainability in the construction sector using performance analysis to introduce BIM-based energy solutions. This thesis is specifically designed for the study and optimization of energy. The case study includes a nine-story high-rise structure. The building is simulated in the Rivet architecture. Basically, we have worked on two things one is orientation and second is by changing materials to check energy efficiency.
