INTRODUCTION OF SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE

  • Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is an innovative concrete which is able to flow under its own weight, completely filling formwork and achieving full compaction, even in the presence of congested reinforcement. 
  • The concept of self-compacting concrete (SCC) was proposed in 1986 by Hajime Okamura and the prototype was first developed in Japan in 1988 by Ozawa. 



Objectives

  • The main objective of this project is to make environmental friendly and cost effective concrete. 
  • For this we make self-compacting concrete (SCC) with different percentages of Bentonite Clay and Rice Husk Ash as a replacement of cement. 
  • Compare the results of mechanical and Durability tests with varying dosages of Bentonite Clay and Rice Husk Ash.

Methodology

  • Mix Design for SCC
  • Preparation and Casting of concrete 
  • Tests performed on fresh concrete 
  • Mechanical Tests (Compressive and split tensile)

Project Outcome

  • The test results indicate that bentonite clay and Rice Husk ash decrease the passing ability and filling ability of SCC.
  • The concrete specimens’ tests indicate that Rice Husk ash and bentonite clay additions of up to 10% and 15% of the weight of the cement tend to improve the compressive and split tensile strength of hardened SCC and durability of concrete also increases.
