Our project is related to pure Structure Design and Analysis. Our building lies in Islamabad region in seismic zone 2B, seismic zone factor 0.20 and soil profile type is Sc i.e very dense soil and soft rock. Our group supervisor is Professor Dr. Saeed Ahmed (HOD Civil Eng. Dept. CUI WAH Campus). We are also in coordination with NESPAK Pvt. Ltd.. Our main objective of the project is Safety and Economy, although these parameter are the primary importance of an engineer but keeping in view of market trend economy is neglected on a large scale, same designs are copied and used in every building thus neglecting safety (to some extent) and economy. Using a high strength concrete with high compressive strength say 7000 psi in column members can decrease the quantity of steel reinforcement because column is a compression member, although tension can not be neglected but reinforcement can be reduced thus making economical design.
Objective: Practical knowledge is an important element in determining an engineer’s intelligence which comes through experience. The main focus is getting expertise in design of buildings by considering safety and economy.
Socio-economic benefits: Different designers that are in the market do consider safety as there first priority but neglecting economy doubles the project cost. It is been observed that same design is being copied and used in different buildings that also affects the safety and also the economy because as the location changes different other environmental factors also change i.e. soil profile type, seismic zones etc. So working on economy along with safety is our priority.
Project Methodology: Etabs and Safe software are used in the design of buildings, there are also some other software available used in the design of structure, we opted these two software for our project. Etabs work on the Strength Design criteria whereas Safe software works on the basis of Finite Element Analysis. The building codes used are UBC-97 and ACI 318-14. I would like to conclude that it is a duty of an engineer to use the latest design codes that are published by higher authorities.
Project outcome: The main outcome of the project is getting expertise in design of buildings that will be beneficial for us in the market by working on safety and economy.
