This is a research project in which we explore the benefits of introducing a VR simulation into multiple civil engineering courses in undergraduate education. In this paper the effects of desktop based virtual reality systems on student learning in a construction engineering education environment have been investigated.
Project Objectives:
This project has two main objectives
1)To study the effects of Desktop Virtual Reality systems on student learning in a Civil Engineering learning environment
2)To investigate if desktop virtual reality systems can be viable tool in teaching complex spatial structures to Civil Engineering Students.
Project Methodology:
In this study a Desktop based 3D Virtual Learning Environment was created and implemented in multiple civil engineering subjects to increase student learning and understanding of their course content. Actual student performance was then compared between a control group, who did not use the simulation, and the intervention group, those who used the simulation.
Socioeconomic Benefits:
The research done in this study can benefit society as a whole as it can pave the way to improving our level of education by making VR technology more mainstream in our engineering institutes which will translate into better quality of engineers.
Course Outcomes:
Through the assessment tests and quantitative perception survey conducted in this study it is evident that desktop virtual reality systems can be a very useful addition to Civil Engineering Classrooms for teaching students structural analysis and can improve their understanding understanding of complex spatial concepts that exist in structural engineering systems.
